  There are currently no new houseboats  registered in Alappuzha as the government imposed a  ban  a few years ago due to the proliferation of boats in the waters.  The Kerala Port Authority, which launched a campaign against houseboats in Alappuzha over two months ago, has so far impounded 36 boats. Ships seized include those  without compulsory license, registration, insurance, etc. They are being held in a detention yard in Aryad.
