MI is Real Madrid of IPL
Bengaluru, April 13: Watching RCB fall to a clinical Mumbai Indians brought back memories of the time when we religiously followed the Galácticos era. There are many similarities between the Real Madrid and the Mumbai Indians. But the difference is that this IPL team performs as a unit, too. The popularity they enjoy across the globe, the money they make, the intense scrutiny that their private lives are subjected to by the media, and last but not the least, their continued ability to perform when it matters.
Just like Real Madrid was studded with stars like Luís Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, David Beckham, Raul and Roberto Carlos, the Sachin Tendulkar-led squad also have amidst them some of the most recognizable names such as Harbhajan Singh, Andrew Symonds, Lasith Malinga, Kieron Pollard to name a few. Individually, these cricketers are considered the best in their positions.
Warriors captain Davy Jacobs, who joined Mumbai Indians in the 2011 season, believes that the feeling he goes through when he walks into the dressing room cannot be expressed in words. Jacobs says, “It has been an honour to be a part of Real Madrid of IPL. But it is more of a family feeling here. We back each other and work hard to achieve the targets of the team.”
“It is an humbling experience. When I see those superstars, I feel I am privileged to be part of that dressing room. It is a massive honour to be a part of this team.”
On the team strategy, Jacobs said: “We wanted to get off to a good start in the tournament and thankfully we have won our first two games. We travel back to Mumbai and hoprfully will carry the momentum.”
The South African batsman also highlighted the importance of being assigned roles in a team which bolsters individual brilliance. “Well, there is a definite role for everyone in the team. Obviously, Sachin [Tendulkar] has got his own role. He runs the show and the guys play around him. My role is to get a good start and stick to my game plan and the team’s game plan. It worked for a short periods tonight and gave us momentum.”
With his wicketkeeping, Jacobs has brought balance to the side and he credits former India keeper Kiran More for the improvement. “I love keeping but I must say that I have been working hard with Kiran More for the last few weeks. I have put hours and hours together to be consistent behind the stumps but a lot of credit goes to him. I am really enjoying my wicketkeeping and it does help the balance of the team.”
This is Jacobs’ first visit to India and the presence of fellow countrymen in the support staff of Mumbai Indians has helped him in more than one way. “It does help. We have got Polly [Shaun Pollock] as the mentor, Jonty [Rhodes] as the fielding coach and now Lance Kluesner as well. Guys have got a good management and we hope that we live up to the expectations.”
